About Halstead
This busy little town lies surrounded by delightful Essex countryside. It is perhaps best known for the beautiful old white weatherboarded three-story mill built on the banks of the River Colne in the 18th century. It was used by Samuel Courtauld the silk weaver. With it's double row of uninterrupted windows divided by sparkling white painted weatherboarding, the mill remains the most attractive building in Halstead.
A short distance away from Halstead lies the village of Castle Hedingham. This lovely village is dominated a fine Medieval castle with an impressive 110ft Norman keep. An interesting feature of Hedingham Castle is the fact that it has remained in the same family since it was built by Aubrey de Vere in the 12th century. The castle offers thrilling Jousting Tournaments, thus, there is something of interest here for all the family.
The lovely Colne Valley is full of delightful places to see and explore. A trip on the Colne Valley Railway is recommended.
