About Brightlingsea

A medieval port on the Colne estuary, Brightlingsea was once an associate member of the Cinque Ports. The history of the town goes back to Roman times and it's industry has always been linked to the sea.

In the 20th century Oyster catching was important and there was a large fleet of 'Colchester Smacks' leaving from the harbour. The picturesque natural harbour accommodates around 500 boats and Brightlingsea has become a centre for Yachting and other watersports.

There is an excellent Promenade which has Boating Lakes, and a Paddling Pool is greatly enjoyed by children who also get tremendous fun from 'crabbing' amongst the tidal pools left by the receeding tides. The Colne Yacht Club welcome visitors and for thos interested in the history of the town there is a museum in Brightlingsea. This is a pleasant place and visitors are assured of a warm welcome.
