About Watermouth
Watermouth is a picturesque little inlet that turns inland from the coast. It has a fine beach of shingle and sand through which little streams trickle to complete their journey to the sea. The summertime sees the little bay full of yachts, fishing boats, and colourful sailing boats, all jostling for position as they head towards the sea. This is an area where sailing is greatly enjoyed by almost everyone.
Towering above the bay, is the Neo-Gothic Watermouth Castle which these days has become a pleasure park and offers family entertainment for the young and not so young. In the castle museum are relics from the days when smuggling was rife all along this fine coast.
Interestingly, this quiet little place was used during the second world war to test 'pluto' the pipeline under the sea that was used to supply fuel to the Allies following the D-Day landings.
Watermouth is in a favoured spot on a stretch of coast that is clustered with interesting little coves and bays. It is a picturesqe area and well worth a visit.
