About Teignmouth

Teignmouth has a history deeply rooted in Saxon times, it is a place where for many centuries life continued peacefully for the inhabitants of this small historic port. However, the 19th-century brought great change, the advent of the railways brought tourists and the area began to flourish as a holiday resort. Today, Teignmouth is a lively seaside town with a busy working harbour that is an endless source of fascination and pleasure. The harbour is constantly alive with a continual flow of sea traffic, large ships, fishing boats and gaily painted pleasure craft enter and leave frequently, there is always something to be seen. On an historic note, it was from here that Dartmoor granite was shipped in 1821 to build London Bridge.

The wide sweeping promenade on the seaward side of the town is graced by fine Victorian buildings overlooking picturesque lawns and flower beds. The town has stylish shops as well as the usual seaside souvenier shops, there is a mixture of quaint back alleyways and little narrow lanes that show some old and interesting properties. In Northumberland Place there is a commemorative plaque to John Keats who lived here in 1818.

The Victorian pier dominates the seafront and a miniture lighthouse marks the entrance to the harbour. There is a fine bowling green and as well as childrens play areas there is also a miniture railway. Fishing trips are offered from the busy harbour where waterside inns provide a thirst quenching drink on your return. The quaint yachting resort of Shaldon is reached via a bridge crossing the estuary or, by a short ferry trip across the water.

Teignmouth is surrounded by lovely countryside, with the pretty town of Newton Abbot just a short drive away. Other interesting places in the region include; The Gorse Blossom Railway Park situated on the edge of beautiful Dartmoor and the NT property of Bradley Manor which is open to the public.
