About Taddiport
The best view of this delightful hamlet is from Castle Hill, Great Torrington. The village is known for its strip fields, enclosed by hedges, that reach to the banks of the River Torridge - the fields were in the possession of Taddiport's Leper Hospital which had existed since the Middle-Ages, but fell into disuse at the end of the 17th century.
Saint Mary Magdalene's Church was the lepers chapel, this remains today as a chapel-of-ease. Visitors to the church can see a Leper window of 1972, and a 16th century text which refers to the unjust settlement reached over the leper's strip fields.
This is a lovely place to spend a quiet walking holiday, the footpaths along the River Torridge are very picturesque and have a wealth of wildlife habitats. At Taddiport an old bridge spans the river which is surrounded by a rich agricultural landscape of farms and country cottages.
Taddiport lies close to Great Torrington, with the nautical town of Bideford being within easy reach, this gives access to the Torridge estuary and the North Devon Heritage Coast.
