About Newton Ferrers

Steep wooded slopes rising up from the River Yealm form a stunning setting for attractive Newton Ferrers. It is a place of sheer enchantment with narrow streets crammed with characterful properties, leading down to the estuary where many small boats are beached and moored. The glorious South Hams of Devon provide many spectacular towns and villages, Newton Ferrers is one of the finest, making it an ideal base for touring this beautiful part of England.

The River Yealm offers excellent boating opportunities as well as providing good sport for fishermen. The Yealm is also close to the South Devon Coast Path so nature lovers and walkers are well taken care of. There is a small harbour, ideal lazing and watching the boats sail in and out, and there are pleasant small beaches to swim from.

Noss Mayo, another delightful village flanked by National Trust woodland lies above the creek which forms the southern boundary of Newton Ferrers. From this high vantage point there are excellent views over undulating countryside, the Yealm and Wembury Bay..A friendly rivalry exists between the two villages which comes to the fore at regatta time, when there is fun and merriment for everyone. A good days sport usually ends in one of the several lovely pubs found dotted along the estuary where winner toasts loser and everyone has a jolly good time.

The properties along this stretch have a quintessentially English olde-world coastal charm. Steeped in history with a wonderful air of timelessness pervading almost every inch make both Noss Mayo and Newton Ferrers a must on any tourist agenda. It should be noted that the terrain is mostly hilly and car parking is restricted-superb scenery and lovely coastal views make walking well worth while!

Places to visit include: National Shire Horse Centre, Kitley Caves, The Old Mill (NT), Historic Plymouth, Dartmoor Wildlife Park, take a sea fishing trip or enjoy a boat trip round the coast.
