About Mortehoe
An attractive coastal village set on a steep hill above the glorious sweep of Woolacombe Bay. From Morte Point, beneath which there are treacherous reefs, you get the most amazing views of Baggy Point and sometimes, on a clear day, views extend to lonely Hartland Point.
This is a superb holiday destination, a perfect place for families to enjoy an idyllic summer break amidst lovely open countryside with wonderful coastal scenery. It has its eyrie side, tales abound of wreckage and plunder - Mortehoe, is said to have been the haunt of smugglers for centuries. On a lighter note, there is a host of things to do in the area, visitors can take their choice of fishing, golf, horse riding, sailing, and even hang-gliding. If none of these appeal, then you can simply laze on a beach watching the daring antics of energetic surfers. This is a great place for surfers, competition is keen and so are the creamy Atlantic rollers! Fascinating places to see include; Bull Point Lighthouse, the mysterious Doone Valley, picturesque Clovelly and a wealth of gardens, wildlife parks, potteries and museums are open for public view.
On an historic note - Mortehoe is mentioned in the Doomsday Book of 1086, it has a delightful 13th-century church which shows exquisite bench ends carved appropriately with sea monsters and it has a Heritage Centre where the visitor can learn all about the resorts seafaring traditions.
