About Merrivale Prehistoric Settlement
Set in a dark, brooding corner of Dartmoor, the Merrivale Rows show a vast variety of shape and formation. The site is also known as the Potato Market and is the second most import ritual site on Dartmoor.
The stones, with a stream flowing swiftly between them, have many interesting items including standing stones and a large menhir. The area to the south of the site contains a "Stone Circle", whilst the ceremonial rows occupy the northern side of the site. Other varieties of stones can be identified, some small, some large, but all dominate, adding historic and geological interest to this desolate moorland area.
The Merrivale Stones, sometimes known as The Plague Stones, can be found just off the B3357 between Princetown and Tavistock. It is a fascinating site, particularly eyrie on a misty day, but once the mist rises these weathered stones battered by strong Dartmoor winds, present an unforgettable sight, well worth the effort of getting there.
