About Lynton

The pretty resort of Lynton lies high above the wide rugged cliffs of Lynmouth Bay. Lynton, boarders with the wild beauty of bracken and heather clad moors that form the vast Exmoor National Park. Once a quiet uneventful place, Lynton's popularity was caused by the explosion of the railways, a line reached here late in the 19th-century bringing with it Victorian and Edwardian tourists who were enchanted with the moorland and coastal scenery of this hither-to unexplored by the masses, region. It is a wild and passionate area, the nature of the rocks and the power of the swirling ocean have carved a majestic coastal stretch known as the Valley of the Rocks. Here, jagged tors and huge rocky outcrops, sweep hundreds of feet to the sea below.

The passing centuries have brought little alteration to Lynton and many of the fine Victorian properties, built during the early, heady days of rail travel, remain to be admired today. The town hall was built with money provided by wealthy publisher, Sir George Newnes, in celebration of his son's 21st birthday. Sir George was the publisher of the Sherlock Holmes novels, he was also responsible for the building of the cliff railway, built as an alternative to the steep 1 in 4 perilous road journey from Lynmouth.

In this lovely area there is much to do and plenty to occupy the visitor; there are Safari trips exploring Exmoor, sea-fishing trips and boat trips out to Lundy. There is a nearby Brass Rubbing Centre and the national trust property Watersmeet House.
