About Colyton

The town of Colyton, in Devon, first appeared as an ancient village around 700 AD and appeared inthe Doomsday Book as 'Culitone'.

It was once described as "the most rebellious town in Devon" due to the number of its inhabitants who joined the Monmouth Rebellion in 1685.

Colyton has a grade 1 listed church 'The Church of England parish church of St Andrew's' which has stood on the site since the 11th century, replacing an older Saxon church.

the church's 14th century octagonal lantern tower is said to have been used as a beacon for ships River Axe, which was once navigable.

Seaton Tramway, which is a narrow gauge electric tramway, runs 3 miles from Seaton to Colyton via Colyford.
