About Budleigh Salterton

This town is perhaps best known for being the scene of Sir John Millias' painting, The Boyhood of Raleigh. It is a resort through which pervades an air of Victorian graciousness and one could be forgiven for thinking that this is where Budleigh Salterton began. But it did not, the town has a long history and it is known that during the 13th-century, the village, was a salt-panning community which supplied the local priory.

Budleigh has a pretty shingle beach, not ideal for sunbathing, but none-the-less, very pleasant.. The village is surrounded by glorious woodland that provides attractive walks through peaceful glades and ancient trees.

In All Saints church, a pew bears the Coat of Arms of the Raleigh family. Sir Walter Raleigh was born here in 1552. Unfortunately, the house is not open to visitors.

Nearby Bicton Park, offers such attractions as a Countryside museum and a narrow gauge railway.
