About Wirksworth

Interestingly, two famous writers have links with Wirksworth, D.H.Lawrence lived at Mountain Cottage, at close-by Middleton and George Eliot made the town the scene of her novel Adam Bede.

Traditionally, a mining town for both lead and calamine, the town is noted for some fine buildings which include the beautiful parish church of St.Mary which amonst it's other treasures has a Norman font. The almshouses and ancient grammar school date from 1584 and Moot Hall and Hopton Hall are both worth seeing. The town has serveral wells and at Whitsuntide well-dressing ceremonies are held. The town offers excellent shopping facilities and at nearby Carsington Water there is a visitors centre.
