About Sudbury Hall
This delightful historic house which was built in the early 17th century for the Lords Vernon, has all the ingredients for a lovely family day out.
It has an exceptionally fine Restoration interior, showing exquisite woodcarvings by Grinling Gibbons, a richly decorated staircase by Edward Pierce, and murals by Laguerre. The Long Gallery at 138 feet is one of the longest and most lavish of its kind, it is a really beautiful room, very calm with fine views over the undulating countryside and the River Dove. The house also possesses a rich display of Vernon family portraits and the State Bedroom used by Queen Adelaide is a joy to behold.
At Sudbury there is a fun museum dedicated to childhood, this explores childhood from the 18th century onwards through the medium of fascinating displays.
Sudbury Hall is set amidst rolling Derbyshire countryside, it surrounded by magnificent grounds where you can see many wildlife species, these include Little and Tawny Owls, Kestrels, Grey Heron and for inquisitive little ones there are frogs, toads, newts, dragon-flies, grass-snakes and numerous other birds.
There is a pleasant tea-room in which to relax, and a shop for the sale of souvenirs.
Sudbury Hall lies on the River Dove, it is reached by a short journey of around 6 miles from Uttoxeter.
