Sir John (1764-1848) was one of Ulverston's best-known sons. He was a great traveller and prolific writer, and as Secretary to the Admiralty for 40 years, was responsible for sweeping reforms of the Royal Navy. He helped seal Napoleon's fate by exiling him to the lonely island of St Helena. His literary work included the classic report ‘The Mutiny Of The Bounty.’ In 1830 Sir John Barrow founded the Royal Geographical Society; in 1835 he was created a Baronet. Around the North Polar region, Barrow Strait, Cape Barrow and Point Barrow keep his name in perpetual remembrance.
