About Torver
The lovely village of Torver is found in rich countryside beside Coniston Water in England's Lake District National Park. It is a delightful place to stay and is noted as a starting point for exploring the Old Man of Coniston, or that favourite of Wordsworth, the beautiful Duddon Valley.
From the village you can wend your way over lonely moorland, past sparkling rivers and silvery tarns, entering a magical world of beautiful scenery and wildlife that has inspired poet's, author's and artists for many a long year.
Torver itself is an attractive place with lovely old stone cottages and a few impressive stone houses of yesteryear. It has a graceful church, St. Luke's, built by Paley and Austin in 1883 to replace an earlier church on the site of a 12th century chapel.
The village caters mainly for walkers and tourists. Once the stability of the village depended on surrounding farms, but these days it is mainly a small resort village with friendly bed and breakfast accommodation and a couple of pleasant inns, one dating back to the 14th century!
Places to visit include Lake Windermere, Grizedale Forest Park, Stott Park Bobbin Mill, Rydal Mount, and if time permits take a trip on the Lakeside and Hatherthwaite Steam Railway.
