Description

Herdwicks at Rydal Water

Herdwick sheep are the native breed of the Lake District and live on the highest of England’s mountains. They are extremely hardy and are generally found running freely on the fells. These chaps however were in a field bordering the southern shore of Rydal Water. Every photographer should have one in their kit bag as they are as close to a metering grey card as you will ever find. They also produce very tasty meat and to quote a local farmer from the Langdale Valley 'Our lamb is not mass-produced, factory farmed or force fed but slow matured – it is ready, when it is ready'

I don't know what else is in your kit bag but there must be something you dig out to get sheep's attention so that you can do your thing with the camera.

I think they might be one of the oldest breeds in the country too if memory serves. I suppose all the Lakeland sheep with be lining up for there photo taking when they see you later this month.
