About Skiddaw Forest

Scenery comes no finer than the wild mountainous grandeur of Skiddaw Forest. Despite the name there are no trees here, only the desolate moorland that has been here for thousands of years. This was once a hunting ground, privy only to Norman Barron's and noblemen following the Conquest, and Coronation of William in 1066.

Today, it is a Mecca for all walkers and climbers. Hunting continues but mainly in the form of shooting for grouse and pheasant. There is nothing here to detract the eye from the sheer scale and splendour of the scenery. Half way up Skiddaw one treks past a lonely Youth Hostel, at 1550 feet this building was referred to in Victorian times as "the most isolated building in all England" it is four miles from the nearest surfaced road and can only be reached on foot or by bike!

Skiddaw House was built in the 19th-century to accommodate local shepherds and their families. It has had an interesting and varied history until it was bought and converted into a Youth Hostel in 1987. It is an enviable place with breathtaking views from every single window. There is nothing to mar the peace, nor the spectacular glory of Skiddaw, Bencathra, and the fells of Uldale and Calderbeck. Indeed the hardy people reaching the hostel reap a rich reward of tranquillity, and crystal clear air amid a limitless scenic beauty, quite beyond com
