About Stratton

Each Maytime sees the the Sealed Knot re-enact the Battle of Stampford here in Stratton. It is a lively re-enactment that attracts visitors from far and wide. Stratton is a short distance inland from the resort of Bude and was the scene of a Civil War battle in 1643. A plaque and an obelisk commemorate the spot where the battle was fought and won by Royalists commanded by Sir Bevil Grenville. The Tree Inn provided headquarters for Sir Bevil, who had a servant of massive proportions (even by today's standards). Anthony Payne was over 7ft tall and weighed 38 stone. A picture of him hangs in the Tree Inn and his tombstone is in the local churchyard.

Stratton is in an idyllic spot, it is easily accessible from Bude, it is a little place that is a pleasure to visit in any season of the year.
