Description

St.Winwaloe Church - Gunwalloe

This is the porch area of The Church of St Winwaloe at Gunwalloe which is often known as "The Church of the Storms". St.Winwaloe I believe was a Breton Saint and the stone statue is probably a depiction of him. The Church is known as " The Church of the Storms" as the porch faces Church Cove and at high water in a time of storms the crashing water could reach the door. The high banking you see is all that protects the tiny church from the full force of the Atlantic. The square detached small tower house the bells and I have read are surviving medieval bells. Had I been an hour later I would not have got the shots that I did as a wedding was due to take place and their was floral and ribbon decoration over the porch and on the ends of the pews- the weather at the time was glorious and with the setting of this tiny church more or less on the beach somebody was to have a perfect setting for their day. Ruth, I think this may have answered your question.
