About Chysauster Ancient Village
This is a classic prehistoric site, quite possibly a Celtic settlement occupied almost two thousand years ago. In its wild moorland setting the site is potent with atmosphere, it is the largest of the courthouse villages, clearly showing eight stone-walled homesteads, and fragments of other buildings. Each house would have had a central courtyard surrounded by thatched rooms.
Interestingly, sites such as these are peculiar only to Lands End and the Scilly Isles. This one, perfectly preserved by English Heritage, represents the oldest village street in England, thus giving visitors some idea of how our very early ancestors lived.
Chysauster Ancient Village is one of the finest prehistoric sites in Britain. Steeped in mystique, the site provides an unforgettable experience for everyone, it is a place that no visitor to these parts should miss.
