About Warrington

This town can claim to have something made for Queen Victoria, which was famously rejected by her - this is the pair of Golden Gates made in 1850 for Sandringham House. Following the Royal rejection, these magnificent gates were bought by Frederick Marks, a local Warrington business man, who later donated them to the town.

Warrington shows many fascinating features, a wander around the town reveals many hidden surprises, some of a more modern nature such as the wonderful sculpture of Alice in Wonderland, and others are architectural gems seen only if you cast your eyes above the level of shop windows crammed full of tempting goods. This is when a quick glance reveals attractive properties built during the elegant Georgian period, it also shows buildings of a more sombre Victorian style. There are wonderful "Cheshire" black and white timber-frame properties, one being the delightful Marquis of Granby Inn. Perhaps the finest building in Warrington is its palatial Town Hall, an impressive building originally built as Bank Hall in 1750 to a design by James Gibbs.

In the local museums visitors can explore the history of Warrington from Stone-Age times, its parish church dedicated to St. Elphin was mentioned in the Doomsday Book. This was rebuilt during the 14th century, its landmark spire reaches to 281 feet and can be seen from most parts of the town.

During the 20th century, Warrington gained a reputation for brewing more Beer than anywhere else in Britain, this ousted Burton-on-Trent which had previously been the traditional centre of the brewing industry.

The town offers visitors many rewarding experiences, there are fine bridges to be seen and St. Helens Canal has pretty tow paths to walk along and plenty of interesting spots to relax doing a bit of fishing. Wide squares lead to exciting shops, pubs, and restaurants, and in the narrow streets which still retain much of the old medieval street plan, you can capture the "olde-worlde" atmosphere of the Warrington of yester-year. Another pleasurable experience is the town's markets, these include a fish market. There are plenty of green open spaces, including beautiful parks with flower filled gardens, fountains and statues.

A short distance from Warrington lies Daresbury, here you will find All Saints Church which has a magnificent stained glass window dedicated to Lewis Carroll, this depicts many of his characters including his famous Doormouse.

Warrington is ideally placed for exploring the Mersey river and Liverpool.
