About Congleton
This lively market town stands on a bend of the River Dane, it quite possibly takes its name from the Celtic word "congle" which in English means "a bend". It is a pretty place with a thriving community, plenty of attractive shops and some noted buildings.
A landmark in the town is provided by the rather splendid clock tower above the handsome town hall, whilst the Lion & Swan Hotel dazzles you with its rich timber-framed exterior and mellow oak panelled interior. In the 16th century this was a busy coaching inn, which in spite of various degrees of modernization has fortunately managed to retain its timeless charm and atmosphere. There is a wealth of old oak beams, ancient fireplaces and exceptional furnishings.
The parish church of St.Peter makes an interesting visit. It stands on a steep incline and was built during the town's Georgian period. There is a clock face tower with turret, and inside, the classic Georgian interior remains untouched. It is resplendent with original galleries, pew boxes, 18th century monuments and coats of arms.
In the town the busy shopping centre offers plenty of scope for everyone, offering shops of all types, some with merchandise spilling over into the street. The town hosts several events including an annual carnival. Craft and Antique fairs are held, and tours of Beartown Brewery can be arranged. There is a theatre, and a museum tells about the people of Congleton, its life and times.
A short drive away from the town lies one of Cheshire's finest period properties, Little Moreton Hall. This is a beautiful timber-framed property which has remained virtually unaltered since it was built in the year 1580. Five miles to the south of the town the rise of Mow Cop makes an ideal vantage point for viewing the Cheshire landscape.
New residential areas have been popping up in recent times, these have extended the town somewhat but fortunately there is no loss of charm. Congleton would make an ideal base from which to explore the open Cheshire countryside and the Peak District National Park.
