The Rose & Crown Hotel standing in the heart of Tring. The Rose and Crown Hotel is a Tudor Style Coaching Inn, overlooking Trings main picturesque church. The Rose & Crown Hotel standing in the center of Tring, by its name indicates an origin in Tudor times and has existed as a hostelry since the 16th Century. Tring is a Market town set in the beautiful Hertfordshire countryside and bordered by the Chiltern Hills and the Dunstable Downs. The justices met here on a highway business in 1711 and from the middle of the 17th Century to the middle of the 19th Century, it housed the excise office. The Landlord in 1832, Timothy Norwood, brewed his own beer and was also an excise man. In 1852 it also served as the booking office for the London and Northwestern Railway Company, and later the Inland Revenue office. Even after coming off the railway, The Rose & Crown was still an important and busy coaching inn and as well as its more aristocratic connection, was also a popular meeting place for local farmers. Beer was brewed on the premises until the 1860s. The original building was Tudor with the addition of an early 18th Century frontage of three stories with a tiled roof, five dormer windows and an archway entrance to the yard. It stood flush to the present pavement and had a bowling green at the rear. The hotel stood in large grounds in which fairs and circuses were held. It was demolished in around 1905. At about that time it was bought and rebuilt in the Tudor style, mainly for the guests of the family, by Lord Rothschild who lived in Tring from 1837 and whose architectural influence can be seen in much of the town. The designer was William Huckvale. Each of the 27 bedrooms at the Rose & Crown is tastefully decorated with recently refurbished bathrooms with marble walls and marble floors. The bedrooms all have direct dial telephone, satellite TV, wall safe, and 24 hour room service.

Our hotel dates from 1400 - timber beams, inglenook fireplaces and a thatched roof are just some of the original features. Our bar offers draught ales, fine wines, spirits and brandies and perhaps that special cocktail or two! Our intimate and cosy restaurants offer a varied menu, which include home-made food, fresh vegetables and vegetarian dishes. 8 en-suite bedrooms are available, all tastefully decorated and furnished, most with antiques. Many rooms have either a four-poster or half-poster bed and include telephone, television, trouser press and tea/coffee making facilities, as well as wireless broadband internet access. In addition to all of these creature comforts, all of our overnight guests are served a 'traditional' English cooked breakfast which is included in the room price. We are a totally non-smoking establishment, although smokers are welcome in our designated outside areas. Please note we do not allow children under 16 years to stay here as we do not have facilities for young children and we do not allow children under 16 years in our Bar/Restaurant after 6pm daily. No dogs allowed, with the exception of guide dogs, in any part of the hotel.

The rooms are located throughout the original seven houses and with its winding staircases and corridors it is easy to get lost within the labyrinth of The Feathers. The rooms vary in size and location, with some sited in The Feathers House - just 10 yards from the main hotel reception. Due to the age of the building, there is no lift at the hotel.
