About Chalfont St Giles
Chalfont has an attractive old world charm that has been a source of inspiration to film directors for several decades. It is a pleasant town of spacious green areas an abundance of pretty black and white timber-frame cottages and houses. One such cottage was the home of the famous blind poet - Milton. He moved here with his family to escape the ravages of the plague in London in 1665. While here, he finished Paradise Lost and started Paradise Regained. His cottage is open to the public and first editions of both books are displayed.
St. Giles Church dates from the 13th-century. It is a beautiful church and it's interior shows medieval wall paintings and a Purbeck marble font. Interestingly, Bertram Mills, of circus fame, is buried in the churchyard.
There is a museum here and noted places to see include The Vache and Deanway. There are several noted inns and restaurants and some pleasant picnic areas can be found in the countryside surrounding the town. There are excellent shopping facilities with some specialist antique and craft shops.
