About Sandhurst

Currently this town is best known for its Royal Military Academy, training ground for those hoping to attain high office in the British Military Service. Some famous service men have passed through its acclaimed doors, at present it is home to Prince Harry, younger son of Prince Charles, heir to the throne of England, and soon he will be joined by his elder brother Prince William, who is second in line to the throne.

The Academy was first established in 1813 as The Royal Military College. Its imposing buildings were designed by James Wyatt, they are quite simple two storied buildings stretching the length of the parade ground, with a frontage that is only broken by an impressive six columned classical portico.

The town possesses a fine church with records stretching back for over four hundred years. St. Michael's is a beautiful stone building with some splendid stained glass and other treasures. It sits serenely in a tree lined churchyard surrounded by graves and tombs of noted local families from many centuries.

What is now a lively typical Berkshire town was once part of a forest with a Royal hunting lodge. This is said to have been visited by Royalty from the time of Henry VIII. Prince Arthur, elder brother of Henry crossed the Blackwater River at Sandhurst on his way to meet his bride, the ill-fated Princess Catherine of Aragon, who eventually became wife to Henry VIII.
