About Biddenham
Lying ensconced within a loop of the River Great Ouse in the beautiful Ouse valley, yet within easy reach of Bedford, this pleasant rural place was recorded in the Doomsday Book of 1086. It has splendid colour washed, thatched roof cottages from a by-gone age and more substantial houses of 19th-century build. There is a handsome Merchant House of this period but Biddenham's crowning glory is it's historic church. The Church of St.James is interesting for it's varied church architectural styles. Dating from the 12th-century, the architecture covers four periods - Norman, Early English, Decorated and Perpendicular. Amongst it's treasures the church has a 15th-century font and a Jacobean screen.
Visitors to Biddenham will find that in spite of being a dormitory for commuters working in the larger surrounding towns and cities, it remains a peaceful and pastoral place offering quiet places of contemplation along the river banks and splendid views over the surrounding countryside. Biddenham has a good community spirit and hosts several well attended annual events.
